1MDB scandal: Verdict time for Najib RazakMalaysia’s top court will deliver a major verdict today

RNE Network.

Malaysia’s top court is set to deliver a verdict on Friday in former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s largest trial linked to the 1MDB scandal, involving the state fund he co-founded in 2009.

U.S. investigators allege that at least $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB by senior officials and their associates, with over $1 billion allegedly deposited into Najib’s personal bank accounts.

Najib was previously found guilty of graft and money laundering in 2020 after receiving funds from a 1MDB unit. Two years later, he became the first Malaysian prime minister to go to prison after exhausting all appeals.

Voted out in 2018, Najib apologised last year for mishandling the scandal during his tenure. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for each charge, along with fines up to five times the value of the alleged misappropriated funds.
