Australia’s lawmakers on Wednesday approved sweeping legislation cracking down on firearms and giving authorities the power to ban protests, following the nation’s deadliest mass shooting in decades.
The reforms passed the upper house of the New South Wales (NSW) parliament early Wednesday. The new laws cap the number of guns an individual can own at four, or 10 for exempted groups such as farmers. They also grant authorities the power to prohibit protests for up to three months after a terrorist incident.
The NSW government, where the shooting occurred, recalled parliament to introduce the country’s strictest firearm reforms. Father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram are accused of targeting a Hanukkah event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people.
At the federal level, Australia is also pursuing new laws to create an aggravated offence for hate preaching, penalise those attempting to radicalise minors, and establish a register of extremist groups that it will become illegal to join.
