Saffron Blooming Season Begins in Pampore, Fields Drape in Colours and Fragrance

RNE, NETWORK.

The world-renowned saffron fields of Pampore in south Kashmir have once again come alive with the onset of the saffron harvesting season. Known for its unmatched aroma, colour, and quality, the saffron flower has begun to bloom, transforming the landscape into a sea of purple and gold hues.

The delicate saffron blossoms emerge in late October when most other flowers in the Valley have withered, continuing to bloom till mid-November. During this brief but magical period, Pampore’s fields turn festive as men, women, and children alike engage in the meticulous process of hand-picking saffron flowers — a tradition deeply rooted in Kashmiri culture and heritage.

Often referred to as “red gold,” saffron holds immense economic and cultural significance in Kashmir. Beyond its role as a premium spice that enhances the flavour and colour of food, it is also valued for its use in high-grade medicines and perfumes. For thousands of families across Pampore and nearby villages, saffron cultivation remains a vital source of livelihood and a cornerstone of the local rural economy. Farmers expressed optimism over this year’s harvest, sharing their joy as the long-awaited season began. “We eagerly wait for this season all year. Now that the picking has started, we are hopeful of a good yield and high-quality saffron,” said one of the growers.
