U.S. missiles struck targets across Iran on Friday, as President Donald Trump vowed major military action against Tehran and its Houthi allies in Yemen.

The strikes came two weeks after the collapse of an interim truce that had been intended to end the conflict. In response, Iranian armed forces fired missiles at U.S. bases in neighbouring Arab countries and warned they could also target non-military buildings used by U.S. personnel.

In recent days, Trump has threatened to expand the scope of attacks by targeting Iran’s energy facilities and bridges, deploying ground forces to seize the country’s oil hub on Kharg Island, and bombing the deeply buried nuclear-linked site known as Pickaxe Mountain. The Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway at the entrance to the Gulf, has remained at the centre of the conflict. The war, now in its fifth month, has killed thousands, fuelled global inflation and heightened concerns over a wider economic downturn.
