Nepal has issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, former Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, in connection with alleged corruption, making them the latest high-profile figures targeted by the new government.

The warrants, issued on Tuesday, were approved by Judge Mahendra Khadka following a request from the Department of Money Laundering Investigation related to an inquiry into the acquisition of illegal assets.

Deuba, a senior leader of the Nepali Congress party who has served five terms as prime minister, and his wife are currently abroad for medical treatment and have denied the allegations.

The warrants come a month after Prime Minister Balendra Shah won a landslide election on a platform of youth-driven political change, marking the first elections since the deadly September 2025 unrest.

During the youth-led movement, Deuba’s house in Budhanilkantha was set on fire, and investigators found a large sum of burnt banknotes. Forensic tests later confirmed the fragments were genuine currency, triggering a full-scale investigation.
