The U.S. Senate has taken steps to end the federal government shutdown that has lasted 40 days, reaching a bipartisan agreement to fund the government.
Senators have begun voting on the compromise funding plan aimed at reopening the government. The Senate is considering a House-passed bill that will be amended to include both a short-term funding measure, extending government funding through January 2026, and a package of three full-year appropriations bills.
At least eight Democrats are expected to support the measure, which is likely enough to ensure its passage in the Republican-controlled Senate.
