Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday welcomed a U.S. peace plan, saying it could “lay the foundation” for a peace deal in Ukraine. He confirmed for the first time that Moscow had received a copy of the plan from the United States.
In televised remarks, President Putin said he believes the plan could serve as a basis for a final peaceful settlement, while noting that it had not yet been discussed with Russia in detail. He also warned that Russia could seize more territory if Kyiv rejects the proposal, referring to Russia’s claimed recent capture of the Ukrainian city of Kupiansk.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pledged on Friday to work quickly and constructively with the U.S. on the peace plan to end the conflict with Russia. In a video statement, he urged Ukrainians to stay united during what he called one of the most challenging moments in the country’s history, emphasizing that he would not betray Ukraine’s national interest.
Earlier, President Zelenskyy also held a phone call with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, during which he stated that Ukraine would collaborate with the United States and Europe at an advisory level to advance a peace plan for the ongoing conflict with Russia.
