The U.S. military on Friday carried out large-scale strikes on more than 70 Islamic State targets in Syria in retaliation for an attack on American personnel.
A U.S.-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes and ground operations against Islamic State suspects in Syria over recent months, often in coordination with Syria’s security forces.
U.S. President Donald Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that American forces were “inflicting very serious retaliation, just as promised.”
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the strikes targeted ISIS fighters, infrastructure and weapons sites, adding that the operation was named “Operation Hawkeye Strike.”
Meanwhile, Syria reiterated its commitment to combat Islamic State and to intensify military operations against the group.
